  • The Rise of Ethiopia’s Startup Mindset

A few years ago, even the word “startup” was unfamiliar to many people in Ethiopia.I still remember the challenge of explaining the difference between an SME and a startup.

Many people saw them as the same thing.A startup is not just a small business.

It is built for innovation, scalability, speed, and solving problems in new ways.Today, the word “startup” has become a buzzword in Ethiopia.

More people are talking about innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and investment. That progress is important. But the deeper startup culture, disruption, risk-taking, experimentation, collaboration, resilience, product thinking, and long-term ecosystem building is still developing. And honestly, that is normal.Strong ecosystems are not built overnight.

They grow through builders, failures, learning, and persistence. What gives me confidence is the youth.I see young Ethiopians becoming more curious, more creative, more global, and more willing to build solutions instead of waiting for opportunities. The ecosystem may still be young, but the mindset is changing. And mindset is where every innovation revolution begins.
